Foot Orthotics
Foot Orthotics are devices that are designed to alter or modify foot function and are used to treat, adjust and support various biomechanical foot disorders.
Some orthotics are simple insoles which consists of a flat base with various pads attached as indicated by the clinicians foot drafts but the most effective are custom made devices which are manufactured to meet the specific needs of an individual.
There are two main types of orthotics. Functional foot orthotics (FFOs) and accommodative orthotics, sometimes known as (TCIs).
FFOs are usually made from thermo plastics and are designed to support abnormal foot biomechanics.
TCIs are usually made from EVA and are designed to relieve minor foot pain and correct minor foot problems.
Ankle Foot Orthosis
An ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is an externally applied orthopaedic appliance which is designed to protect, support and prevent or correct deformity of the foot, ankle and lower leg complex. AFOs can be made from plastic, metal or leather. Various hinge designs are also available for AFOs which allow articulation at the ankle joint.
AFO’s are commonly used to provide support for foot drop or for ankle instability associated with various conditions such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida and stroke.
Neoprene Knee Supports
Made to measure neoprene knee support can be used as an alternative when stock supports are not suitable. They give an option to increase length, additional strapping, padding and support.
Neoprene knee supports are available in three colours – beige, royal blue and black.
Protective Helmets
We offer various designs of plastazote protective helmet with inside and outside leather covering which are appropriate for soft protection required by children and adults with cerebral palsy and epilepsy etc.
Knee-Ankle Foot Orthosis
A knee-ankle foot orthosis (KAFO) is an externally applied orthopaedic appliance which encompasses the foot, ankle, lower leg, knee and thigh. The KAFO provides the features of an AFO but in addition provides protection, correction and support of the knee joint.
KAFOs are made from metal and leather and also thermoplastics with metal only being used for the hinges at the knee. The lightweight plastic designs offer more support and are cosmetically acceptable and can fit into most shoe designs. Whilst the metal braces are more adjustable, they tend to be heavier, bulkier and require special adaptations to footwear. A more substantial shoe is required when using the metal brace type KAFO.
KAFOs are mostly used to treat symptoms due to polio, cerebral palsy, paraplegia and various other conditions.
Knee Calipers
We offer an extensive range of below knee calipers such as double and single irons, Rizzoli and hinged irons manufactured in steel or Dural aluminium.
